Pros and Cons of DTC Advertising

Hilary Baldwin, MD and James Q. Del Rosso, DO sit down with Derm Insider Host Neal Bhatia, MD to weigh the pros and cons of direct-to-consumer advertising on patients. They agree that if done well and with a primary focus on disease state rather than a specific drug, these ads can encourage patients to start with their doctors. But, they comment, most commercials focus on specific drugs and raise red flags about a plethora of side effects that most patients don’t need to worry about. These ads can also make patients seek out a specific treatment that may not actually be there best choice.
